Hey All,

So it’s pretty much official, with the numbers completely on Bob’s side, the winner will be officially stated and well I’m stating it now, HE WON!!!

Bob was following the plan, yes he had his bumps along the way, on and off the plan but the important thing was he kept getting back on! He didn’t take much time to dwell on what he did wrong, he realized it and fixed it. He endured tough 6:30am sessions with me 2x’s a week, worked out on his own doing cardio, yes I saw him at the gym, so he was making it happen.

He had a hand injury at one point, sorry bob, the bag looked like it was fun to pick up, my bad…..lol

He had long days at work, long weekends, life that got in the way but he still did it and didn’t make excuses, he pulled through it making it happen. So next time you say tomorrow, is tomorrow any better than today? Ask yourself, when will it really be a good time to get started.

What about now, are you doing just enough to stay the same, do you want results, cause results take work, time, and consistency.

Sorry a bit off on a bit of a rant, let’s get back to Bob and his WIN!!!

This was his blog over to me a couple of days back: Ok May 29th The last day Final weigh in was 288.8. That’s down 31.6 Total. I have her beat hands down with 9.8% Weight loss. Time to start picking out my lawn tractor. However I think I have found something better than a lawn tractor.

He did it, but I have something to say, in my quick talk with Kelly this morning somehow I still got the but your still buying me a steak! Ummmmmm aaaahwhat????

I had a feeling that this might happen, somehow the guys won but somehow we lost all at the same time! Yes I know how it works ladies, I’m married…..I get it!!!!

I want to give a big hand to both the husband and wife Bob and Deb, who both won, they both lost weight and they both started on a path to a better lifestyle through Healthy Eating and Fitness.

That’s what it’s all about the real Contest, the one to a better way of life and a better you! I’m pumped and happy for the both of them and wish them well on their next adventure!

Until Next Time

Your Fit Coach

Hey All,

Yup! It’s been a little over a month since my last update. I took the last 4 weeks or so to evaluate what I was doing and see if changes need to be made. I have always said it, it’s a process and if your not willing to go through it then well, progress will stop.

For the last month the scale hasn’t moved and yes I did smash it with my pink hammer but I know that it has to move, I still have about 20lbs or so to go. I have noticed differences in my body, more muscle tone for one and lines that weren’t there about 5 months ago. But the scale has to move, it’s that simple.

Now, I’m not leaving it just up to the scale as inches and bodyfat % are also in my progress tracking but BF % hasn’t moved as well.

So, where do I go from here? Well simple, I took my meal plan and converted it to a carb cycling plan. It’s a bit more work, but I’ve used it in the past and with great success. I still eat very clean but the structure of my meals and how they are planned from day to day differ.

Here’s the breakdown:

2 High Carb Days, 2 Med Carb Days, 3 Low Carb Days, now before you start with oh atkins this and south beach this, it’s not! This is still a very clean meal plan where I am getting all my carbs, proteins and fats, but just not all at the same time everyday.

The most important part of this to look at is the macronutrient level, Carbs, Proteins, Fats, and how each one causes a different response in our body. By tweeking our intake, we can cause changes (fat loss, Muscle gain) that we are looking for.

Here is how it works, and to break it down a bit, and give you the science behind it:

Monday High Carb, Tuesday Med Carb, Wednesday Low Carb, Thursday High Carb, Friday Med Carb, Sat & Sun, Low Carb.

So the High Carb days raises the body’s insulin levels there by filling glycogen stores, keeping the metabolism burning and keeping muscle loss at bay.

The Low carb days will aid in (Fat Burning days). They keep insulin levels low enough to allow for maximum fat burn while retaining muscle.

So on my High Carb days 400 grams a day, my protein will come down to about 200 or so grams per days, and my fats will be almost well not there just some in the morning.

On the Med carb days about 120 grams a day, my proteins will rise to about 350 grams per day and my fats will come up to about 60 grams per day.

Finally on my low days which is about 80 grams of carbs a day, 370 grams of protein a day and about 90 grams of fat per day.

Now a good thing to point out here is that calories will change each day and that isn’t the most important thing to concentrate on as it’s more about the grams per day and how they add up.

The idea behind this is that on the high days I will have enough carbs to sustain me for the next couple of days until I hit my high carb day again a few days later. Most if not all Bodybuilders use this plan at some point or stage of their training and nutrition regime. But it’s not just for them, it’s for anyone looking to lose weight, retain muscle, look leaner……

Now I redesigned this on Friday/Saturday and today is my first official day on it and I have already had to make adjustments to it so that it feels right. Again it’s a process.

Now it’s not enough that I have a new meal plan, the structure of this meal plan has to go hand and hand with my cardio days, so on low days and even med days, I want to maximize fat burning and to do that, I want to hit my cardio hard! Now I don’t have to spend 2 hrs in the gym doing the treadmill but what I want is serious interval training and intensity during these sessions.

This plan is designed to make you lose bodyfat pretty rapidly but still I am giving myself the next 60 days to hit my goal and that’s plenty of time. I’ve done it before and in 60 days I dropped 27lbs! I was losing weight every couple of days as this had me checking the scale every 2 days, not going to do that this time around. Just 1x per week. Might not see the same results, but I will see results and that’s key!

Like I said this isn’t for most people but at some point if what you are doing isn’t working then it’s time for something new or different. I gave myself plenty of time to make sure that what I was doing wasn’t working before I jumped ship.

I will end up going back to another meal plan once this is over, and this is a good point to make, I started with a pretty basic plan adjusting my ratios along the way, I am now carb cycling and this is yet another phase of my transformation. When this phase or stage is over, I’ll end up going to another meal plan and when the times comes that plan will depend on what my goals are.

I have made some great progress, staying on track with my nutrition and workouts, I have added more cardio in the last few weeks. I went out for a run on Saturday and ran 2.30 miles without stopping but just once in the middle for an interval workout at the park.

I’m moving along and in the right direction! Are you? Ask yourself if you are doing what needs to be done to hit your goal, have you given up? Is it because you weren’t seeing results? Don’t let that discourage you, get back on, get help, I’m here to keep your progress moving!

I love seeing my progress, yes it’s been 5 months, and it could be another 3 to get to where I really want and to have sacrificed 8 months for a life time of feeling fit and looking it! Well that’s priceless.

Until Next Time

Julie has given some thought here!

This is pretty much my mantra when working out. If I don’t feel something the next day or even later following my work out, I didn’t work out long enough, hard enough or push myself to the maximum my muscles could endure before failure. I also think if you get ready for the gym by doing your makeup and putting on perfume, you might as well stay home. I leave the house with all make up removed; two two inch pigtails sticking out the back of my bob haircut and possibly my clothes may match or at least somewhat go together. This is when buying all black workout clothes comes in handy. It’s like a funeral for my fat. Kind of when I’m at work, my uniform, the color of which is cleverly called LAPD blue (in real person’s terms = navy will suffice) is blue top on blue pants. No thought process needed. This is a nice mindset when dealing with scumbags. Once again no thought needed secondarily when there is a task at hand.

But like I’ve been cleverly advised by my friend and trainer, pain and discomfort doesn’t always mean your workout was not good or complete enough. He advised me to listen to my body and to accept that there is a strong possibility that the absence of “soreness” is also due to the fact that my strength and flexibility have adapted to my training regimen. Ok, I’ll buy into that. But for so long, I guarantee most athletes would side with pain = success. So evaluating one’s progress is very important and once you can determine the needs and gains, then you can have a truly “GREAT” workout.

What additionally gives me a giggle is the actions and efforts by the “High School boys” working out along side of me, the ONLY woman in the free weights section of my gym. Initially I had wanted to kill them, as they are annoying and in the way constantly. There really needs to be a time during the day that they are allowed into work out because they are ridiculous. I can’t tell you how many times I was ready to scream at them while they hang around the piece of equipment I’m in line to use. They have no etiquette, they don’t know how to lift and I imagine they do sustain injuries from swinging their ridiculous weights to and fro. And I even get a chuckle in their Neanderthal conversations that I can barely hear over my headphones regarding the weight they can put up. I have a friend who is a dead lift competitor, and would love for laughs have her come in and show them up. She’s 5 foot nothing maybe 100 pounds. Their looks would be precious.

One of the most important things I’ve also had to learn over the years is patience. This was first a virtue when I tackled taking off my “baby weight” after my darling Miss Grace arrived. I had to relearn that it took nearly a year to gain 50 lbs. and would more likely than not take that exact amount of time to take it off if not more. So when you start out on a fitness journey, start small, take baby steps and except that everyday won’t be great, every day won’t be an accomplishment. Look at each day as a success when you go to bed at night, for you are one day closer to the healthier you. It took me over a year for those I work with to say, hey, look how much weight you have lost, and their surprised expressions were priceless when I told them how long it has taken to get to this place and how I did it . There is no magic pill. There is dedication, there is determination and there is desire.

Thanks Julie!!! Awesome Stuff!

Hey All,

I have a guest post today from Julie Davie, Julie was part of our Bootcamp in DanversShe is going to be part of our blog community so I want to take a minute to introduce her here:

I am 35 yrs. old and have been in law enforcement for 13 1/2 yers, a police sergeant for the last 4 years. I am more importantly the mother to my beautiful Grace and a wife to my wonderful husband Jim. I like to run, LOVE to work out and leave the gym looking like a truck ran over me. I am making 2012 the year that I get rid of my excess weight and move towards a healthier life both in mind and body

Some more on Julie!

(this is NOT my hello kitty tattooed foot – FYI)

Since the very day I could run….I never looked back. And I would have to say it was then that my mind and body merged into one mind frame. That was to move was to be happy and healthy. I moved through my elementary years driving my mother crazy with every desire to play and be part of every sport possible in our town.

This lead to two things:

1. My mother’s name was changed from Connie to…”oh, your Julie’s mom” and

2. Our family would now lead the life of gypsies, well rather would imitate them in an attempt to get me to every sport, meet and event I was participating in.

All the while along this adventure, my weight as a kid was never considered. I was average in utero, I was average at birth and was a slim, athletic framed kid until puberty and the dreaded Reese’s King sized package of peanut butter cups!

Also let me mention, since my father thought it wise at the time prior to my birth that he wanted his family to grow up in suburbia, we moved to a town with NO public transportation in the centennial year of 1976! Yippee! Little did he realize that I would make friends with people who lived across town approximately 100 miles from my house (average way a 13 yr. old views distance) and up a hill with a gradient of like 45 degrees.

Thanks dad for the pre-lance Armstrong calves! So as you can see my life was filled with exercise cleverly disguised as “fun” with no cares other than school, sports and fun, and oh did I mention more sports.

But the one thing that I was never defined as was a number. Weight was never something I was aware of in any scope of my life. And to be honest I liked the ignorance to it. So I wonder why I in this world have let myself be defined by a three digit number that can make or break my day. In this journey out of fat town, I will try to entertain you as to my fight with my three digit number, the scale that hides in my bathroom, my attempts at quick fitness and weight loss and all the giggles that you will share as I guarantee you, my adventures will make smile.

Thanks Julie!

Until Next Time

Your Fit Coach

Hey All,

This past week was a real eye opener, one that made me think and revisit my goals, the ones that I set for myself about 4 months ago.

The goal? Lose Bodyfat!

Now I attacked it from my workouts, my meal plans which I have updated a couple of times to fit what I need. Now the part that I missed on just a bit and one that I talk to my clients about day in and day out is reprogramming your mind, your doing things one way now, you think it’s gonna all of a sudden happen overnight?

The answer is simple….NO!

Here’s what happened to me and hopefully you will see how important it is to continually be thinking about your goal and what you want. Really what you want.

I got a call about 2 weeks ago from a buddy of mine that owns a gym in Peabody, he asked me to participate in a powerlifting contest, I was mulling it over for a bit then he mentioned that since I was in the Masters class ahh yahhh shhssh please yes I’m that age, but anyway he mentioned that with my strength and what he has seen me lift I would easily set a record in that class and the contest was sanctioned.

Well for the past couple of weeks, because of this my workouts starting getting more intense with the weight I was lifting and pressing and it was great until this past Thursday. I was dragging, completely spent as my muscles were taking longer to recover. I starting talking it out with Kelly and with some words of wisdom she bestowed on me, it got me thinking.

Was this part of my goal?

Have I changed my end goal?

What did I want? To be strong, to lose bodyfat? What???

Well I went back and it was simple, I had created a goal in the beginning, did it all of a sudden change from losing bodyfat? NO! It was the same goal but how I was training was not matching that goal.

I had to think about this, revisit it and get back on track.

My goal was to lose bodyfat, but my goal did not include powerlifting anymore I wasn’t in that training mode, which requires more calories alot more to keep up with those workouts.

When I was done talking it out with Kelly, there was a weight that was lifted off my shoulders, no pun intended……

I was clearer, all of a sudden I had more energy, my goal was visible again, and I was back on track mentally!

I was weighed down with the thought of having to go into that contest, and compete at a level that I was used to about 10-15 years ago and even though I could still compete at that level now, it wasn’t part of what I want right now.

I was attracted to it for one simple reason, lifting that weight makes you feel superhuman, it’s a high like no other. One that I can’t explain but can only be felt.

I had to let go of that and keep moving on…….

No matter how much you workout, how much you eat right, you have to keep your goal in mind and not stray from it. Write it down, it will become reality, once you see it visually it will realize itself.

Until Next Time

Hey All,

It’s been a bit since I posted but not cause I fell off the wagon, simply due to the fact that my body was again taking it’s time to adjust to the change I made to my ratios. More Carbs a bit less protein and less fats in my diet. I can tell you that the last couple of weeks have been just that, not feeling so in tune even though my ratios have been spot on my body is fighting me tooth and nail.

It’s what it will do and I’m pushing through it but just today, I have been feeling like I have been getting back on. I have kept away from the scale and haven’t done measurements or bodyfat just yet. Letting my body adjust to the new plan and feel like I’m back on before I start progress tracking again.

Still been using lose it to track my foods which has been a huge help! It keeps me in check and since changing my rations I have actually cut my calories back about 300 getting in about 2700 a day, which is perfect I don’t feel full but feel like it’s just right!

I’ll be progress tracking next Thursday and can’t wait, the differences I have notices in my body has been awesome, the mirror speaks a thousand words, and new lines and cuts are showing up.

You know I get asked alot about the magic pill and well there really isn’t an actual pill, the pill is everything that I have been outlining above and in previous posts, sticking with it.

Be honest with yourself, if you haven’t gotten the results you have wanted so far and have been working hard to get there well I can tell you that chances are your nutrition is off. It’s just that simple…..

I’m throwing a shout out to Kelly LaCasse as she has really been working her butt off and she just hit a huge mark where she dropped under 20% Body Fat. She can tell you that it took a while to get there and that came with consistency. Her drop in Body Fat was earned! Check out here blog here: http://betterfly.com/kellylacasse/blog

Keep on Burnin! It’s what will get you there!

Until Next Time

So, I smashed the scale so I used a pink hammer don’t judge me! Lol

Seriously though, The scale was prefect for the first part of my weight loss journey and did what it was meant to keep me on track, but now my body is changing and reacting in such a different way that I have to change the way I track my progress.

I’ll still be using the bodyfat calculation, measurements and the last part is really being focused on what I look like in the mirror. It’s a good judge! I will still be keeping track of my foods via lose it as I have to take a look at my ratios yet again.

It’s only been about a month since I changed my protein intake and increased my calories. It’s worked that’s for sure but there was something missing and with the help on my training partner Kelly, I talked it out and she suggested a decrease in protein with an increase in carbs, since my workouts were suffering a bit due to a lack of energy. I just wasn’t getting enough fuel for my heavier workouts that have been taking a toll on my body, that is in a good way!

I am welcoming the increase in carbs as well I love them! That doesn’t mean I’ll be sucking back bowls of pasta and potatos, no I’ll be taking in a split of veggies and whole grains, the great thing is that I’ll feel fuller and my protein intake will still be about 1.5 grams per pound of lean body mass based on my bodyfat calculation.

Plenty of protein for muscle gains and plenty of carbs for fuel! Initially I was a bit hesitant of decreases my protein but the increase in carbs is going to be nice for a change.

So there, in this past month, I have had to stay really in tune with my body and how I am feeling and this what I and you need to do to get closer to the final goal.

I ask questions when I start feeling off:

Why, I am feeling like I have no energy?

What do I have to change, if anything? (My workouts or my Meal Plan)

Ask questions, get help (talk it out)!

Until Next Time

So I made 1 mistake and had 1 incredible result!

So I threw a bit of a hissy fit on Thursday morning as I weighed in and found that my weight had gone up by 2lbs exactly, needless to say I wasn’t too happy but I knew that the scale wasn’t the whole answer…..

I had been feeling a bit bloated and for me to say that well doesn’t feel so comfortable, lol….but I was. I took a look at what I was doing during the last week, and the only thing different was my protein shake. About a week and a half prior I decided to switch up the flavor and went with banana, I still stayed with the same brand as I love Elite!

Now, as you may or may not know what banana’s can do to you, but let’s leave it at bloated…..lol.

To add to this my numbers or ratios were off and I was taking in more calories than usual. Well 2 scoops of the banana had 120 calories more than my regular shake.

Multiply this by 3-4 as i take in roughly 6-8 scoops a day of protein powder and those extra calories were throwing me all off. This is the reason that you really need to journal everything you eat. Its the visual aid that confirms the way your feeling.

So I stopped using it and went back to my regular vanilla and cookies and cream flavor, well within 24 hrs the bloat was gone! I was feeling great again. I didn’t weight back in as I do that on Thursdays, why bother at this point as I went with how I was feeling.

I did however check my body fat and it was the exact same which told me that the weight on the scale wasn’t fat. I also had Kelly check my waist for inches lost and well to my huge surprise I was down another 3.75 inches!!!

Yeah, I know! You know many people focus on the scale and some don’t and my answer to that is some need to and some don’t need to but you need to combine that with bodyfat check ins and how you look in the mirror! That’s the true judge!

Sounds crazy right now, but just the fact that I changed that one thing in my meal plan was the result of a feeling that I delt with for over a week….and one that was a mistake but made me remember that, that one little change really had an affect on how I was looking and how I was feeling.

Yet I lost 3.75 inches in my waist and I couldn’t believe it because of how I was feeling and looking in the mirror, it wasn’t until 24hrs after the bloat went away and I could see the new lines in my mid-section.

Ahh, yes the mirror was my friend, get used to using different ways to measure your progress, it’s so important to not just stick with one thing!

I still have a big goal ahead of me about 25 more lbs and I’m moving closer to it!

Are you moving closer to your goal, I would love to hear about it!!!

Until Next Time
